Osteria Serafina. Culinary treasure off the beaten tourist trail.

A treasured spot likely unknown to many, but regarded as one of the best among Milan's numerous dining options.

Osteria Serafina is the kind of establishment that will appeal to locals seeking fresh experiences beyond their usual haunts, as well as visitors who have had their fill of trendy interiors in other cities, and come to Milan for the singular pleasure of al dente pasta served on checkered tablecloths.

Just keep in mind Serafina’s price point, which, at an average of 90 euros per person including wine and dessert, is slightly above the city’s average.

However, the elegant traditional interior, immaculate white tablecloths, and impeccably uniformed staff more than justify the cost. The ambiance mirrors the sophistication found in upscale Italian restaurants abroad, like in New York, making guests feel like they’re at the heart of the action.

The menu is compact, but the cuisine is, in a word, flawless. Traditional Italian dishes are given a unique twist with subtle, magical details that enhance rather than overpower the flavors, while the portions are not oversized.

Shrimp tartare or artichokes are gently complemented with avocado, puree is elevated with black truffle (typically we would give our preference for the white one but it works wonderfully here). Meat dishes like tagliata or chateaubriand are served with a hint of a magical sauce and crystals of coarse sea salt. The inclusion of a salad of Tigirini tomatoes alongside the meat is a delightful surprise for the taste buds, especially when many restaurants opt for the ordinary supermarket variety.

Osteria Serafina is located not in the city center but in one of Milan’s most affluent and serene districts, de Angeli. Isn’t it a curious cause to immerse into local life? Even enhanced if getting there via the metro as it’s much faster than taking a cab ride.

Great for a large group dinner or for a meal for two, and it’s more of a no than a yes for a date night.

One final tip: request a table inside and don’t forget to mention that you’re there on my recommendation. Your dining experience at Osteria Serafina promises to be a nice one!
